How do you wash cashmere and wool without felting them?

The mistake that ruins wool gloves is movement in warm water: the fibre scales interlock and the material shrinks for good. So wash the gloves by hand in cold water with a wool detergent, gently press the water through instead of rubbing or wringing, and rinse cold as well. Then lay them flat to dry rather than hanging them up – wet wool stretches under its own weight. Do not put in the washing machine, do not tumble dry, and do not place on a heater. Between washes, simply airing them out for a few hours is usually enough.
